PORTRAITS FAQ
No matter what the portrait costs its value far exceeds it's price. After all, portraits are a priceless part of history and can last centuries. Your portrait is your stamp in history.
How do I commission a portrait? A portrait begins with a conversation between us about your wishes and the resources available with which to produce the artwork.
How much does it cost?
We only charge what it takes for us to do our best to make you look your best.
Portraiture offers so many possibilities that the price depends in what you want and the details of the project.
A large standing portrait of someone dressed to impress in a room full of precious objects will cost more than a small head and shoulders portrait. The artist has the experience to offer a wide range of options to fit your budget.
Fees depend on the amount of time it will take to produce the painting. Factors that affect the time are the size of the portraits, the attention to detail, the amount of preliminary drawings and the number of painting and photography sessions involved. Variable expenses such as travel, transportation and framing are the buyer's responsibility.
Though the artist is comfortable painting from life most portraits are done from photographs for many reasons. The sittings generally take from one to three hours. We prefer to take our photographs indoors or outside early morning and late afternoon so as to model the shadows on the face and minimize the squinting. When feasible the color scheme is based on color swatches done from life of the skin tones, clothes and general background tones.
How long does it take?
The time it takes to paint the portrait depends on the scope of the project. We are committed to complete the work in a timely fashion. Rush jobs are accepted, but may require some additional fees. The job is not complete until both parties are well satisfied with the results.
May I provide my own photographs?
You may provide your own photographs if need be. We prefer to take our own photographs, because it gives us a chance to get to know our subject, compose the painting, and the opportunity of painting color samples from life.
Preliminary drawings
We make a pastel drawing beforehand to give us a good idea of what the portrait will look like. Additional drawings and photography sessions are possible for a reasonable price.
May I commission drawings? You may commission drawings of anything you want. Prices vary depending on various factors.
