How does the process of commissioning a portrait go?

The process of commissioning a portrait begins with a conversation between us, to discover what your needs are for your portrait, and the amount of resources you wish to invest in the artwork. The price of the portrait depends on your wants.  The value of the portrait is priceless,

The posing sessions generally take from one to three hours. In this time, I photograph the model in various poses, and paint color swatches of the subject to use as the color scheme of the portrait.  The model does not have to stay still...I can't stand sitting still...I am sure you can't either. Later, in the studio, I make a charcoal drawing, from the photograph we chose, to get a good idea of what the portrait will look like. The cost of this drawing, and the photography, are included in the portrait fee.  Additional drawings are available, for an additional fee of 10%, of the agreed upon price of the portrait. A photography fee of $350 will be added for subsequent photo sessions  Travel expenses are bourn by the buyer.

Upon approval of the preliminary drawing, I commence to paint. The time it takes to paint the portrait depends on the scope of the project. I am committed to complete the work in a timely fashion. Rush jobs are accepted, but may require some additional fees. The job is not complete until both parties are well satisfied with the results.

How do we figure the price of the portrait... ?

No matter what the portrait costs, its value far exceeds the price it costs to produce. After all, portraits are a priceless part of history, and are around for many generations. In four generations, if you don't have a portrait of yourself somewhere, nobody will remember you ever existed. Your portrait is your stamp in history.

The fees vary depending on several factors, mainly the amount of time it takes to produce the painting. Larger paintings take more time to make, as do smaller paintings with a lot of detail. Other factors that affect price are the estimated amount of preliminary drawings, the number of photo sessions, and the travel expenses.

Having painted well over 220 portraits, I have plenty of experience, and am able to tailor my portraits to match a wide range of budgets.

May I provide my own photographs?

You may provide your own photographs and save $350. I prefer to take my own photographs, because it gives me a chance to get to know my subject, compose the painting, and the opportunity of painting color samples from life.  However, there are times when this is not practical, such as when the portrait is to be a surprise, or the subject is no longer with us. In these cases, I relay on my clients description of the subject, and any further information about his or her character and life accomplishments, that may be relevant to the project.
